Two Oregon School Districts, Hillsboro and Reynolds, Adopt Inquiry By Design’s Language Arts Curriculum

September 18, 2023 —  Inquiry By Design’s Language Arts curriculum has recently been adopted by two Oregon school districts—Hillsboro School District in Hillsboro, OR and Reynolds School District in Fairview, OR. Hillsboro School District will be implementing Inquiry By Design’s English Language Arts curriculum, as well as their Secondary Spanish Language Arts Curriculum, for grades 6-12. Reynolds School District, who originally partnered with Inquiry By Design in 2022, will be extending the curriculum to their alternative school, Reynolds Learning Academy, for grades 10-12.

Throughout the adoption process, Hillsboro School District was committed to adopting a standards-based Language Arts curriculum that was not only “inspiring, engaging, empowering, and rigorous for all students”, but one that was “differentiated, personalized, and provide[d] equitable access and outcomes for all.” At the Hillsboro School Board Meeting on June 20, Patrick Maguire, member of the Hillsboro School Board and the district’s Community Curriculum Advisory Committee, described Inquiry By Design’s curriculum as the “clear choice” for Hillsboro teachers and students. The school board unanimously approved Inquiry By Design “as [the] provider for grades 7-12 [English and Spanish] Language Arts curriculum, digital resources, teacher materials, and student resources.”

Reynolds Learning Academy, a public alternative school, serves approximately 200 students in grades 10-12 and houses non-traditional high school programs. Inquiry By Design’s approach to curriculum development aligns seamlessly with the educational priorities of Reynold’s School District, which aims to “prepare lifelong learners to achieve their full potential in a complex and interconnected world.” Anastasia Conlin and Jenna Montgomery, Secondary Language Arts TOSAs for the Reynolds School District Teaching and Learning Department, were instrumental in the adoption of Inquiry By Design as its English Language Arts (ELA) core curriculum for grades 10-12 at the Reynolds Learning Academy.

Hillsboro and Reynolds School Districts are two of several Oregon school districts to adopt Inquiry By Design, including Bend-La Pine (6-8), North Clackamas (6-8), and Tigard-Tualatin (6-12). The company also continues work with several other West Coast districts, including Federal Way Public Schools (9-12), Highline Public Schools (6-12), and Renton Public Schools (9-12) in Washington, as well as Alameda (3-12), Berkeley Unified School District (6-8), and Cupertino (6-8) in California.
