Close Reading in the Content Areas

Helping secondary History/Social Studies and Science teachers respond to the CCSS and TEKS demands for content-area literacy is the primary focus of these workshops. We are pleased to offer separate history/social studies or science workshops at middle school and at high school. Participants will:

  • Experience “as learners” an exemplar close reading unit in History/Social Studies or Science that features text-based discussion and writing tasks.
  • Learn about lesson design that supports and develops students’ abilities to read and gain knowledge from complex informational texts.
  • Learn how to implement Inquiry By Design’s Close Reading exemplar unit in their own classroom.

The two-day version of this workshop features an introduction to text complexity and text-dependent tasks to help teachers develop close reading work with complex texts for their grade level, content area courses. All participants will receive an exemplar Close Reading in the Content Areas curriculum unit.

Who Should Attend?
District and School Level Administrators, Directors of History/Social Studies or Science Curriculum and Instruction, Literacy Coaches, and History/Social Studies or Science teachers, grades 6-12.
