Beyond Standards-Alignment: What Connected ELA Curriculum Really Means

If you listen in on any curriculum conversations in a district office, look at curriculum company websites, or review districts’ curriculum evaluation criteria, you’re almost guaranteed to hear these phrases:

Standards-aligned.

Research-backed.

Comprehensive. 

There’s nothing inherently wrong with these tenets. Standards alignment matters. Research backing matters. Coverage matters.

But they are not enough. They are the baseline. And the gap between what those terms promise and what students actually experience in ELA classrooms is where we need to turn a more critical eye.

If standards-aligned, research-backed, and comprehensive are the bare minimum, then how can we dream bigger to imagine a curriculum that does… more? A curriculum where ideas build on each other across lessons; where reading, writing, discussion, language, and critical thinking work together in every lesson; where knowledge is co-constructed.

In this post, we’ll explore a different — and a more pressing — question that we think should be at the center of curriculum evaluation: Not simply is this curriculum aligned? but instead is this curriculum connected?

By connected, we mean something very specific: not thematically linked, not covering similar topics, but designed so that ideas travel — across texts, throughout discussions, throughout the school year — so that learning builds instead of resets. 

That kind of connection doesn’t happen by accident, it doesn’t happen by aligning standards — it happens by design. 

Standards Alignment Is the Floor, Not the Ceiling

A curriculum can meet every standard on a state’s checklist and still deliver those standards in fragmented pieces. Individual lessons can target the right skills. Texts can meet complexity requirements. Writing tasks can address the right genre expectations. And yet students can still experience the curriculum as a series of isolated activities rather than a connected, cumulative learning journey.

This is because the standards tell you what to teach, not how the things students are learning should connect to each other or build on each other.

This is where knowledge-building enters the conversation. A knowledge-building approach sequences learning so that what students encounter in one lesson becomes the foundation for what they understand in the next. This approach is grounded in what cognitive research consistently tells us: comprehension is not primarily a skill. It is a function of what a reader already knows. The more you know, the more you can learn; the more you learn, the more opportunities for students to build connections and retain knowledge.

But even this is not a guarantee. A 2025 study analyzed reading comprehension instruction in four large districts that had been using knowledge-building curricula for several years. Researchers observed more than 111 classrooms and found that roughly two-thirds of lessons still supported only surface-level understanding, focused on completing tasks rather than grappling with meaning. The curricula were well-regarded. The instruction was still largely disconnected from genuine knowledge-building [1].

The finding points to something important: adopting the right curriculum is not the same as designing the right learning experience. The content was there. What was missing was the design that would make it coherent, connecting the ideas students encountered across lessons into something that grew and deepened over time.

That is a design problem. And it is the one that “standards-aligned” cannot solve.

What ‘Connected Learning’ Actually Means

Standards alignment asks whether a curriculum covers the right content. Connected learning asks something harder: whether that content is designed to build on itself.

In other words, a curriculum can check every standards box and still deliver learning in fragments; texts that don’t connect to the writing tasks that follow them, language instruction that appears separately from the reading that would give it meaning, knowledge that resets with each new unit rather than compounding across the year. Students in these classrooms are not building or deepening understanding. They are completing a sequence of aligned activities. The activities are likely attached to standards, but without continuity, without in-context application, without connections, those activities yield shallow learning.

At its core, connected learning means that the ideas students encounter in a curriculum are designed to travel: across texts, across discussions, across writing tasks, across grades. Knowledge doesn’t just grow and build. It connects. And those connections are foundational to the design from the start, not assembled by teachers or discovered by students on their own.

The Questions Worth Asking: What Does ‘Connected Learning’ Look Like?

When evaluating whether an ELA curriculum is truly connected — not just aligned, not just comprehensive, but designed for the kind of learning that builds and stays — there are questions worth considering:

Do ideas return, or just topics? A connected curriculum is organized around questions or big ideas that don’t resolve easily: questions that a student can enter in sixth grade and encounter again in eighth grade with more sophistication, more nuance, and more knowledge and experience to contribute more. The question is not whether the curriculum covers identity, or conflict, or justice. It is whether the curriculum is designed to return to those ideas from different angles across texts, across units, across years, building deep understanding rather than surveying topics.

Does knowledge build intentionally, or grow in disparate directions? Knowledge-building is sometimes treated as a synonym for content-rich. But on its own, content richness doesn’t build knowledge; intentional sequencing does. A connected curriculum maps what students are learning across units and grades in a deliberate arc, so that what a student encounters in one lesson becomes the foundation for what they can understand in the next. This is how students truly build knowledge.

Does literacy instruction happen as one practice, or as separate components? In many ELA programs, reading, writing, discussion, and language instruction are distinct blocks or separate add-ons. A student who discusses what they noticed in a reading, writes from what came up in that discussion, and encounters language instruction tied to the specific text in front of them is having a fundamentally different experience than one completing each of those activities in sequence.

Are supports foundational to the curriculum, or layered on top of it? A curriculum that requires separate scaffolds, differentiation resources, or multilingual support materials to serve its full range of learners is not a connected curriculum for those learners; it is a fragmented one. The question is whether language development, access supports, and multilingual scaffolds are built into the shared lesson from the start, so that every student is in the same intellectual experience rather than a modified version of it.

Does the curriculum create conditions for students to learn together? This is the question that standard adoption frameworks rarely ask, but it is critical to understanding how learning will occur. Learning is inherently social. When ideas are challenged or questioned or extended in discussions, understanding deepens. A curriculum that requires individual platforms and personalized tracks removes the conditions that make that possible. A curriculum built around shared physical texts creates them.

These are not questions that most curriculum evaluation processes ask. But they are the questions that distinguish a curriculum designed for connection from one that is only designed for coverage.

The knowledge strands that thread across units and grades, the lesson structure that integrates reading, discussion, language, and writing as one practice, the embedded supports that keep every student in the shared experience, the physical Student Reader that makes learning together structurally possible. None of these are features added to a curriculum. They are foundational to it. 

Why This Difference Matters Right Now

The education sector is in the middle of a significant reckoning with curriculum quality. The science of reading has rightly focused attention on what materials are designed to teach. High-quality instructional materials frameworks have raised the bar for what standards alignment and text complexity mean in practice. This is all important.

But the next question, the one that the research on coherence and knowledge-building points toward, goes beyond what a curriculum covers. It is about how that curriculum is designed to work as a whole. Whether the reading connects to the writing. Whether the discussion deepens what the reading started. Whether what students learn in October is still relevant in March, built upon rather than set aside.

“Standards-aligned” tells you that a curriculum has what it needs. “Connected by design” tells you all those parts are designed to work together, grow together, build together.

That is the distinction we think matters most. And we believe it’s time to make Connected Learning the new baseline for curriculum.
