Big changes are on the way with PARCC and Smarter Balanced assessments. Is your district ready? Close investigation of prototype/sample assessment tasks form the foundation of the two-day, professional development institutes. Through a hands-on approach, participants will experience and analyze assessment tasks and participate in close reading of informational texts to answer:
- What do students need to know and be able to do to be successful on the assessments?
- What do the assessments teach us about CCSS key shifts in the ELA?
- What does CCSS-aligned instruction look like that engages students in close reading and writing about complex texts?
Participants will also deepen their understanding of how to select complex texts and create text-dependent tasks to support student achievement on the assessments. Through working with grade-level texts and text-complexity rubrics, participants develop a vision of instruction that reinforces students’ ability to comprehend and analyze complex texts.
Who should participate?
Central district administrators who work with curriculum, assessment, and professional development; Principals and Assistant Principals; Instructional Literacy Coaches; Language Arts teacher leaders.
